HAPPY BIRTHDAY, PAUL McCARTNEY!!!

Happy Birthday to Paul McCartney, who turns 76 today (June 18th). To date, McCartney is the most successful songwriter in history, having written or co-written 30 U.S. Number One hits. McCartney met his original songwriting partner John Lennon on July 6th, 1957 at a church social where Lennon was performing. After joining Lennon’s band, the Quarrymen, McCartney persuaded Lennon to add his friend George Harrison in 1958, and the seeds of the Beatles were born. Ringo Starr joined the group in 1962. According to insider reports, McCartney may release his latest album on Friday (June 22nd), marking his first new collection in almost five years. McCartney will appear with James Corden sometime this week on CBS’ The Late Late Show and make his first appearance on the show’s famed “Carpool Karaoke.”

They day before filming the segment McCartney and Corden were filmed in Liverpool, hitting such iconic spots as the roundabout in Penny Lane and the McCartney’s early family home. “Macca” also performed a mini-set at the Philharmonic Pub and Dining Rooms — affectionately referred to as “The Phil” — which was a favorite late-’50s watering hole of John Lennon and original Beatles bassist Stu Sutcliffe. McCartney performed a dozen tunes — including the world premiere of his new song “Come Home To You.” Later this year, McCartney will issue the next two releases in his ongoing “Paul McCartney Archive Collection,” with 1971’s Wild Life and the 1973’s Red Rose Speedway getting the nod for deluxe editions.

In May 2017, McCartney made a rare big screen appearance as the old pirate “Uncle Jack” in the latest installment of The Pirates Of The Caribbean saga, titled, Dead Men Tell No Tales.

That March, “Macca” released the latest edition to the “Archive Series,” with the deluxe reissue of 1989’s Flowers In The Dirt. The highlight of the entire set is McCartney’s 1987 songwriting demos with Elvis Costello, along with the pair’s 1988 basic tracks, which were the basis of what was in the early stages of a joint project, prior to McCartney moving the album in a new direction. The work the two laid down was among the most groundbreaking and creative McCartney had committed to tape in years.

In addition to its wealth of audio and video content, exclusive features of the Deluxe Edition include a 32-page notebook of McCartney’s handwritten lyrics and notes, a catalogue for Linda McCartney‘s 1989 Flowers In The Dirt photo exhibition, a 64-page photobook, custom-created 112-page book telling the complete story of the album through exclusive in-depth interviews with McCartney, Costello and other key contributors. Along with expanded track-by-track information, the DVD included in the project gives a fascinating 20-minute look into the eventually aborted McCartney/Costello sessions.

Paul McCartney was asked about the advantages of he and Elvis Costello writing together: “We enjoyed each other’s skills, I think. Y’know, I could say to him, ‘No, it’s a little bit rambling where you’re going there with the melody, y’know, pull it in a little bit — let’s not go there. You don’t need to go that far.’ And he was interested in those kind of things I had to say. And he’d nearly always say, ‘Okay, we’ll try it.’ And then he would help me in certain things, like, words, particularly — which he’s full of. Y’know, he’s very wordy. He’s got a bag, y’know, with a lot of books in it and they’re all things he’s heard in pubs or little things that’ve occurred to him, little sayings, little titles. He’s got a lot of stuff.”
