Coming on June 7th is Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue: The 1975 Live Recordings. The groundbreaking 14-CD box set includes all five of Dylan’s complete sets from that tour that were professionally recorded. The box also features “recently unearthed rehearsals at New York's S.I.R. studios and the Seacrest Motel in Falmouth, Massachusetts plus a bonus disc showcasing one-of-a-kind performances from the tour.”

According to the press release: “Launched in the fall of 1975, Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue flouted the touring conventions of the time by featuring an eclectic cast of characters and playing small and unusual venues with little advance notice. The shows would often stretch to more than four hours long, generating some of the artist's most dramatic and dynamic on-stage performances ever. Dylan debuted the new songs he'd written for his forthcoming Desire album with a fire and intensity that Dylan had reached ten years earlier with his incendiary tours with musicians who became the Band. He also took wild, interpretative rides through his back catalog and broke out some unexpected covers.”

The fall 1975 “Rolling Thunder” tour ran from October 30th to December 8th. Among the performers who were mainstays of the trek were Joan Baez, Roger McGuinn, Bob Neuwirth, T Bone Burnett, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Ronee Blakley, Mick Ronson, Scarlet Rivera, Allen Ginsberg, and Sam Shepard. Along the way, special guests appearing on stage, in the studio or behind the scenes were Joni Mitchell, Ringo Starr, Patti Smith, Bette Midler, Kinky Friedman, Dennis Hopper, and Phil Ochs, among others. Along the way, Dylan and the troupe filmed the shows and Dylan-written backstage scenes for the briefly released four-hour opus, Renaldo & Clara.

In the 2009 folk documentary How Sweet The Sound, Bob Dylan reflected on his early work and relationship with Joan Baez — who a decade later went on to join him for the Rolling Thunder Revue: “We could sing just about any kind of thing and make it make sense, uh, to me, it always sounded good. I think it might've sounded good to her, too. Then we began singin' here and there and she just asked me if I wanted to play some shows with her just like that. . . I was just trying to deal with the madness that had become my career, um, and unfortunately she got swept along and I felt very bad about it. I was sorry to see our relationship end.”
