Sunday April 22nd is Earth Day. A day we set aside every year to look at ways to help our planet sustain life.
Just for the record I am not an environmentalist, I am not a tree huger either I am just a guy who thinks we have made great strides in cleaning up our environment. I will tell you why I think that later.
BUT NOW IT IS FLASHBACK TIME!
I was in the 7th grade when the 1st Earth day was held and one of my teachers had us do a little service for our school and neighborhood. I was excited because it meant….. We got to skip class that day! Told you I am not an environmentalist. We left our school and picked up trash for about a mile and a half. I must admit seeing the cleaner area as we walked back made me proud.
I was talking with my wife recently about that day and I made a statement that I think shocked her. I said that the roadways are a lot cleaner now than they used to be.
Some environmentalist is probably wanting to trim my eyebrows with a weed wacker right now. But I think my observation is true. When I was younger if you were driving down the road it was a common practice to just throw anything out the window instead of have a trash bag in your car. My friends and I used to hunt for pop bottles to get money and we would see all manner of trash, mostly food related in the fields and ditches. It was nasty.
During that time our water ways were becoming so polluted that Cuyahoga River in Ohio actually caught fire. Now today the water ways are at least a little cleaner. Can we improve? That is why Earth day is so important. YES WE CAN IMPROVE!
I must admit that I do get a little tired of some of the more radical groups blaming the US for most of the world’s pollution problems. But when I see pictures of the pollution in China with the haze and people running around with hospital mask on to filter the air I just scratch my head. At least the Inversion that hits us every year is caused mostly by a Natural weather pattern. But remember I am not naïve I know that the bad air trapped is full of particulates from our automobiles and factory’s and I know we are making strides in lessening the levels of pollution.
I guess what I am trying to get at is this. We are not as bad as the gloom and doom environmentalist say we are and we are worse off than those who bury their heads in the sand about this issue. People still will use side roads and the country side for dumping unwanted items because they don’t want to take the time or spend a couple of bucks to go to the dump. I have a name for those people and it is a 4 letter word DUMB!
We should all look at ways lessen our environmental footprint. I just think we need to do so with some common sense and not go for knee jerk solutions that have unintended consequences.
Besides that every year on Earth day I get to recycle my Aluminum cans and get an extra 20 to 30 dollars! Then I take my wife out to dinner because I am just that kind of guy!
So on Sunday Earth day celebrate and eat some dirt!
THE COMMENTS IN THIS BLOG DO REPRESENT THE THOUGHTS OF ME AND NOT TO AN INTELLIGENT HUMAN BEING AND IF YOU DON’T AGREE WITH ME EAT SOME MORE DIRT AND GET YOUR ON BLOG!
