Mike Love has just posted on YouTube, “California Beach” — the second new track from his new album coming July 19th, titled 12 Sides Of Summer. “California Beach,” is a revamped version of the Beach Boys' 1979 outtake of the same name, recorded after the band had competed the classic L.A. Light Album.
Love spoke about “California Beach,” telling Rolling Stone, “That mythical place out west; the California I’ve been blessed to call home has provided a lifetime of inspiration. California Beach, in reality is not one, but many wonderful places that have held an allure beckoning so many for countless years. This song has been living in my head for a long time and finally, 'California Beach' has come to life just in time for summer.”
12 Sides Of Summer is a concept album — featuring songs focused all on the summer season. Highlights include covers of the Ramones' “Rockaway Beach,” the Beatles' “Here Comes The Sun,” Stan Getz & João Gilberto's “The Girl From Ipanema,” the Rivieras' “California Sun,” Eddie Cochran's “Summertime Blues” — along with such Beach Boys remakes as “Keepin' The Summer Alive,” “Surfin' Safari,” “Surfin',” and “It's O.K.” featuring Hanson.
Mike Love, who co-wrote and/or sang lead on such group classics as “Surfin' U.S.A,” “Fun, Fun, Fun,” “Surfin' Safari,” “409,” “I Get Around,” “Little Deuce Coupe,” “Do It Again,” “California Girls,” among many others, says he's never been impressed with his own voice: “I've always felt that I sounded like somebody trying to sing. I don't consider myself a Tony Bennett or any great singer. I would say (I sound) earnest. Like somebody trying his best to sing a song and that's sort of the way I've looked at it. And I was fortunate enough to be able to sing lead on so many hit songs.”
He says that unlike most Americans, the Beach Boys' rigorous schedule has always forced him to miss out on relaxing during the summer season: “We're so busy during the summer, though. The Beach Boys get so many offers during the summer that we literally haven't had a summer off in 40 years. However — it's summer somewhere in the world. Sometimes I'll go to Bali, or Australia, or Costa Rica, or Mexico (for) Christmas holidays and stuff like that.”
Mike Love's touring version of the Beach Boys is currently on tour in Europe. The band's next North American date is set for July 25th at Asheville, North Carolina's Biltmore Estate.
