THE BLUES BROTHERS’ MATT ‘GUITAR’ MURPHY DEAD AT 88

The great Matt “Guitar” Murphy, best known for his work in the Blues Brothers band and movie, died last Friday (June 15th) in Miami at the age of 88, according to Rolling Stone. No cause of death has been announced, but a 2002 stroke sidelined the guitarist into semi-retirement. Murphy, who recorded and toured as part of the Blues Brothers band was featured in the 1980 movie and 1998 sequel, Blues Brothers 2000, portraying himself as Aretha Franklin‘s husband, who was dubbed “Mrs. Murphy.”

In addition to his iconic work backing John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd as their alter egos Jake and Elwood Blues, Murphy was an accomplished player with a long pedigree, which included jobs recording and performing with such legends as Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Memphis Slim, Little Junior Parker, Ike Turner, KoKo Taylor, Sonny Boy Williamson II, Buddy Guy, Etta James, and Otis Rush.

The Blues Brothers’ 1979 live version of “Soul Man” hit Number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100. Dan Aykroyd told us that the quality of the song and the players involved were what allowed the song to rule the airwaves a dozen years after Sam & Dave‘s definitive version: “‘Soul Man’ had already been a Number One record so that it would go up to Number One again (sic) with two of the original players on it and well known TV stars, it’s not surprising. I. . . y’know, the song was a good song. It’s Isaac Hayes and David Porter, I mean, it’s. . . y’know, it deserved to be Number One — whether we did it or not.”
