As most of you know I try not to take life to serious.  So today I begin with saying this blog is kind of serious.  Why?  I am worried that we are losing our right to disagree.

I love posting on Facebook and read other friends post about their lives.  Most of the time these friends are far away and with Facebook and other social media I have re-connected with friends that I haven’t seen in years.

But there is a dark side to social media that concerns me.

Last week I made a post on my personal Facebook account that at the same time political but not political.  I won’t get into the details but it was more about my distain for a celebrity than about politics.

One of my Facebook friends took offense, and as I tried to explain myself that was not really about politics my “friend” resorted to a personal attack on me.  Just because we disagreed on a subject.  I was attacked because of an opinion.  The sad thing was that others were drawn into this and it got very nasty.  ALL OVER AN OPINION ABOUT AN ACTOR!

The tone on the thread started to get out of hand with one person dropping F bombs and calling names.  ALL BECAUSE OF AN OPINION!

Are we losing the right to disagree?

And by the way, why do people feel they should use such crude language on social media.  Don’t get me wrong I have been known to use bad language, but I refuse to use certain words in a public forum out of respect of others.

The argument is “I have a right to Free Speech” Yes you do.  But I have the right to not be subjected to it and that is why certain people are blocked and defriended by me.   I don’t mind someone disagreeing with me.  But show some R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

I have a relative that I am very close to but we disagree on several subjects.  But we don’t argue because of the R word.

So if you agree with me or if you don’t agree with me on certain matters that should not affect our friendship.  I will tell you this.  There is not a person on this planet that I agree with 100% of the time.

Unless someone is promoting violence or breaking the law. I reserve the right to disagree and I also reserve the right for you to disagree.   If our disagreement over an opinion is enough for you to attack me on line, then I will tell you this.  GET A LIFE! You need one.  I will always try to respect your opinion but I want that same respect.
