THE BYRDS’ ROGER McGUINN RELEASING FIRST ROCK ALBUM IN 14 YEARS

The ByrdsRoger McGuinn will release Sweet Memories, his first new rock album in 14 years, according to Best Classic Bands. McGuinn’s wife Camilla posted details of the album on her Twitter account stating that among the nine new originals by the couple, McGuinn re-recorded such Byrds classics as “Mr. Tambourine Man,” “Turn! Turn! Turn!,” “So You Want To Be A Rock N’ Roll Star” — and an “update” on “Chestnut Mare,” called “Chestnut Mare Christmas.” McGuinn has been releasing his series of “Folk Den” traditional music collections online for the past dozen-plus years.

Camilla McGuinn wrote: “Sweet Memories is the first studio rock CD that Roger McGuinn has recorded since 2004. It is the CD fans have been asking for at Roger’s concerts. They are continually asking for a studio version of the Byrds songs. So, Roger re-recorded three Byrds hits from scratch and they were so artistically performed that everyone asks, ‘Did you use samples?’ The answer is no! He played every instrument and sang every vocal including harmonies on ‘Turn, Turn, Turn,’ ‘Mr. Tambourine Man’ and ‘So You Want To Be A Rock N’ Roll Star.’ There are also nine other songs never recorded before.” No release date has been announced for Sweet Memories, but it is currently available for pre-order at CDbaby.com.

Roger McGuinn and fellow Byrds co-founder Chris Hillman recently added a half-dozen new dates to their 50th anniversary tour celebrating of the band’s groundbreaking country album, Sweetheart Of The Rodeo. The 1968 album, which brought the creative vision of then-new member Gram Parsons to the mainstream rock world, is by far considered the most important country rock album of the 1960’s, laying the groundwork for the acoustic-based ’70s L.A. sound.

When we last caught up with Roger McGuinn, he was gearing up to begin recording the songs he had been stockpiling: “I’ve got years and years worth of love songs, y’know, rock songs that are good and haven’t been recorded. It’s probably sometime this year, but it could end up being a little later. The paperwork hasn’t been completed yet, the contracts and stuff.”
