I AM AGING NOT SO GRACEFULLY

YOU ARE ONLY AS OLD AS YOU FEEL AND I FEEL OLD! At one time of my life I was a thin good looking young man with a full head of hair.   OK, I was never thin.  But I was thinner, somewhat.  My hair has become gray and I am still good looking. ...

I AM NO HANDYMAN

Over the years I have found out something about myself.  I am not a very good handy man!   But sometimes that is a good thing. Years ago I was having a plumbing issue in my home.  I called a plumber and got the problem fixed.  While he was there I mentioned that I...

OH NO – ELECTION NIGHT COVERAGE IS ON

A famous Jeff Foxworthy joke talks about Presidential speeches and it could also apply to tonight.  To paraphrase. ‘ELECTION NIGHT COVERAGE---IT’S ON EVERY CHANNEL!  WE’RE GOING TO MISS FLIPPER” As a kid I dreaded election night coverage because we only had 3 channels...

QUICK TAKES

  • The eagerly awaited Elton John commercial for Britain’s John Lewis department store has been released and serves as a mini-biopic of Elton’s life. Set against various versions of his 1970 breakout hit “Your Song,” it starts with a modern day Elton playing an upright piano, and using computer graphics, morphs Elton’s face onto previous incarnations of the “Rocket Man” going back through the decades before ending up showing him as small boy on Christmas morning — being presented with the exact piano he’s playing as an adult. Elton was paid a reported $6.5 million to star in the commercial.
  • Chris Thomas, the legendary producer behind classic works by the Sex Pistols, the Pretenders, and INXS, among many others, recalled making his bones during the 1968 recording sessions for the Beatles‘ “White Album.” Thomas, an engineer at the time, was deputized by George Martin to fill in while Martin went on vacation, and went on to help shape the sound of the legendary double album. Thomas told Forbes, “we did seven songs in a couple of weeks and it just became a factory. There was one day when I was with George (Harrison) in (Abbey Road Studio) Number Two working on ‘Savoy Truffle.’ George Martin was in Number Three with John (Lennon) and Yoko (Ono) chopping up bits of ‘Revolution 9,’ and then Paul (McCartney) suddenly appeared and said ‘listen to what I have done’ and he had recorded ‘Why Don’t We Do It In The Road’ and mixed it.” (Forbes)
  • 1980’s icon Billy Idol became a U.S. citizen on Wednesday (November 14th). The news came out via the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services USCIS, who referenced the chorus to Idol’s 1082 hit “White Wedding” tweeting out photos of the British born and raised singer taking the Naturalization Oath of Allegiance at a ceremony in Los Angeles. The organization posted: “It’s a nice day for a naturalization ceremony. Congratulations Billy Idol on becoming a #newUScitizen today in Los Angeles, CA.” (The Daily Mail)
  • Eric Clapton has just released the video for “White Christmas,” one of the highlights on his new Happy Xmas holiday collection. The claymation-looking animated clip spotlights a young boy equally enthralled by an electric guitar and the sound of the blues. Happy Xmas, which was released on October 12th, debuted at Number One on Billboard’s Holiday Albums chart. The album, which sold 6,000 units its first week, also entered the mainstream Billboard 200 albums chart at Number 168.
  • David Crosby believes that the state of America is worse today than it was back in the 1960’s. During a chat with Britain’s The Guardian, he took time out to slam Donald Trump, explaining, “I think right now, it’s worse than the ’60s because the guy we’ve got to deal with is worse. He’s more unrestrainedly bad. He’s like a spoiled child who got into his dad’s office and is peeing on all of the papers saying, ‘Ha, I’ll show you.'” (The Guardian)
    • David Crosby performs on Saturday (November 17th) in Lawrence, Kansas at Liberty Hall.

  • Although he was denied parole for the ninth time back in August, the transcript to Mark David Chapman‘s parole hearing has just been made public. Chapman, who’s now 63, murdered John Lennon on December 8th, 1980 after stalking him for days and receiving an autograph from him only hours before he shot him to death. Chapman is serving a 20-years-to-life sentence at Alden, New York’s Wende Correctional Facility, 20 miles east of Buffalo. Chapman told the parole board at one point, “30 years ago I couldn’t say I felt shame and I know what shame is now. It’s where you cover your face, you don’t want to, y’know, ask for anything.”
  • The Associated Press reported: “Chapman described working at the prison cleaning, painting and stripping wax from the floors. He said he left his quest for notoriety behind long ago and is devoted to promoting the transformative power of Jesus. He said he realizes the pain he caused will linger ‘even after I die.'” (The Associated Press)
