Green Day is facing a backlash after announcing earlier this week that the band has authored a graphic novel called Last Of The American Girls in collaboration with illustrator Frank Caruso.

The problem seems to be that the book, which is described as "celebrating true rebel girls -- girls who push back, girls who use their voice, girls who say no," has been penned by an entirely male group of creators.

A number of users on Twitter have argued that this is not an appropriate subject for four white males to tackle. One user wrote, "Don’t you think the main ‘rule’ to being an independent woman in punk should be to, well, not be told how to live their lives by men who have no experience in what its like to live as a woman?"

Another added, "If you’re going to claim to empower women with your book you should probably consider the optics of having no women involved in creating it."

Named after a single from the trio's 2009 album 21st Century Breakdown, the graphic novel will arrive October 29th. Green Day has yet to comment on the backlash.
