25 years after the release of Foo Fighters' self-titled debut album, Dave Grohl recalled that it was the band L7 that inspired him to continue making music. While reeling from Kurt Cobain's death, the band — who had also lost a band member — sent him a postcard gently prodding him to not leave his music behind.

Grohl told Apple Music, “Yeah, that was soon after Kurt’s memorial that I got that. It basically said 'I know that you probably don’t want to play music now but you will because that’s how you get through these things.'”

He went on to say, “And it was a huge wake up call for me because they were right. I couldn’t consider playing music at the time and then I did realize that maybe that’s the thing that’s gonna get me through this.”

Dave Grohl told us a while back that he and Kurt Cobain could always bond over hard rock: “Kurt had the same love of (death metal band) Celtic Frost and (hardcore act) Black Flag, and I've listened to this music for twenty-something years and my passion for it has never died, and the thing that kind of bugs me about that Nirvana metal thing is that, y'know, we never set out to do anything really. We just wanted to play music, and we kind of became the poster boys for that whole turnover.”
