Melissa Etheridge appeared on ABC's Good Morning America to talk about how she's dealing with the recent death of her son. Etheridge's 21-year-old son, Beckett Cypher, died in May of a drug overdose. Etheridge and her ex-partner, filmmaker Julie Cypher, had two children together — daughter Bailey and Beckett, both of whom were conceived via artificial insemination with David Crosby acting as the couple's sperm donor.

Etheridge updated the public on how she's been holding up over the past month-and-half: “Time does heal. It's only been a couple of months, but I've been busy and made myself busy. You go one day at a time and you get through the grief and you get through the healing. We have the Etheridge Foundation, which I'm very intense about raising funds for research into what we can do with this disease.”

She spoke frankly about how opioids came to ensnare Beckett: “He loved to snowboard and thats where he broke his ankle, and that's where he started the whole downward spiral of this, y'know, of painkillers. You do everything you can, because you're a parent. Y'know, you think, 'What could I have done? Could I have done more? And there has to be a place where you think. 'Of course I did everything I could. I loved him, I loved him, I loved him — and there's just a place where just have to start loving yourself.”
